This vehicle should not be using any oil at 80K miles. Mine has 84K on the clock and I've run many other XUD diesels close to 100K miles without oil consumption problems.
It's strange that it suddenly used oil when your son used it, or was it already low? If the glow is OK and it will tow start then it sounds like compression (valves or rings)...

The lock mechanism's are driven by electric motors, not solenoid's, if they will lock the motors must be ok, try closing the relay contacts on the locking control circuit board manualy (but only briefly), it's located at the side of the handbrake lever under the plastic trim, one relay fires the lock pulse and the other the open pulse, don't close...

had a 1993 SX TD and the lights were crap, had to drive round woth the fog lights on all the time.
I eventually bought xenon bulbs which are considerably brighter than the standard ones but are a tenner a piece or thereabouts (well they are from halfords). this sorted the problem in a fashion, in that I could see at night without resorting to fog...

On you next cold start, drive for 5 miles or when the gauge reaches the half way point, stop and feel the top hose, if the stat is opening early or stuck open the hose will be hot all the way to the rad, if the stat is ok the hose should still be cold at the rad end.

In apit under the car is perfect; better than axle stands any day as you can keep weight on the back end whilst doing brakes.
No you don't have to keep the car running; just pump right up to the top and switch off is OK (that way you don't gas yourself whilst removing the rear spheres.

there are no replaceable bulbs within the switches........afraid it will be new switches

XM won't start. When key turned, the fans come on full blast, though they are off at switch.

This is one area where I put heaps of trust in the specialist's and let them get on with it, even if you can dismantle and re-assemble it without contaminating the interior, will you be able to get hold of the replacement parts.
