Xantia Idle speed.

Post by brookdale31 »

My Xantia 1.9td (1994) ticks over at just a midges under 1000 rpm. It seems a little fast and does try and run away with you when stopping. What should it be set at? I tried to adjust the stop on the pump so the arm could return further but it didn't make any difference.

When I had my Xantia TD it idle just under 1000rpm on most days. Others it would drop down to about 800. I was told that this was due to a spring/damper that pushes the throttle back off.

Check the thermo switch that controls the vacuum pull diaphragm to raise the idle speed when cold to prevent stalling. This will raise the idle to around 900 from the standard 750 to 800 rpm.
There is a small electro valve at the back of the engine bay near the LHM reservoir that can also fail too.
Make sure all the vacuum pipes are sound and not leaking. Robin

1994 fast idle will be by wax stat - look for a cable running from the thermostat to the back of the injection pump. It should be slack when the engine is hot - odds on it won't be! Idle should be 1000 cold, dropping to about 850 when it's warmed up. If you disconnect the cable from the pump the lever should spring to the RH side of the car and idle should be 850 or so. Push the lever back to the left and it should go back up. It's possible for the lever to seize through lack of use if the cable has been U/S for a long time.
