please help i need to change brake pads on xantia 1.9td estate 1996
the car won't start the stop sign and the brake lights are on,

The brake pads won't make the stop light come on, and the lack of pressure (as you mention in your other message) won't prevent the engine from starting !
Whatever is preventing the engine from starting has nothing to do with the brakes.

....the reason the Stop and Pressure lights are on is <b>because</b> the engine won't start - not vice-versa.
Does the engine turn over at all?

Unless you undo the mountings the car will turn over with the engine and you will still scratch the roof. Better turning the crankshaft.
