Xantia not starting first time!!

Post by tonyb1 »

For the first time in 2 years the beloved Xantia didn't start when I turned the key. It's been a bit 'muggy' lately when it first starts, shudders a bit, but today, it started for one second, then died, again, then died. I had to give it a bit of acceleration to start it, then it was ok. Had the same prob tonight. Can anyone tell me what's happening? Cheers.

Sounds like you need a new set of glowplugs.

You have (1) some dead glowplugs or (2) a leak of air into the fuel system. To rule out (2), before attempting to start, pump up the hand primer bulb. When it's firm, try starting. If the engine runs normally, then you can be fairly sure you have an air leak.

Yes Mike, there is white smoke when it starts, which then clears. I've just got home and checked the replies, cheers. Too dark to try the primer, will give it a go tomorrow then take the required action. Thanks again.

Just as well! If you've just switched off, the primer bulb will be firm. It's in the morning, or after standing several hours, that it might not be.
