Xantia HDi Exclusive estate 1999.
I've just noticed a whoosing sound from under the n/s wing ahead of the wheel when I stop the engine, It carries on for about 2 minutes.
I've taken to inner wing plastic liners off to investigate.
There is a ally tank about 10 inches tall, 4in round with an exhaust pipe coming out the side and exiting out the bottom. It also has 2 water pipes attached.
By the side is some sort of pressure monitor.
Any ideas?[:D][:D]

Hi, the sound is either coming from your cooling fans for the rad, OR (I don't have AC)from the condensor for the air conditioning, the noise is probably like the sound from a fridge compressor....

Are you sure that it is not the aircon drier?

Auxiliary heater to bring the engine rapidly upto temp when the ambient drops, HDI's don't loose the same amount of heat to the cooling system as the ID's.

Paul, at first I thought of the fans but they were still.
Tom the drier is on the o/s silly boy.
Dave it looks like you have hit the button, so is it an electrical heater? as it smells of a mixture of parrafin and diesel..
I'll try and post a pic if I can work it out how to.

That's certainly what it looks like but I have never seen one on a Xantia before. They are more commonly used on boats for werm air heating. The exhaust pipe sugggests that combustion is taking place so I'd look for a fuel line and the woosh is the fan or pump within the unit, I'd guess.
Failing that, you haven't hoovered up the Pizza boy's moped?

These heaters were available as an option on the 110 version of the Xantia HDi, and possibly standard on the Exclusive model. I've never actually seen one on a Xantia before, but a friend's Landrover Freelander TD4 has one very similar to this.
On the Freelander it seems to be a combination of the outside air temp and the coolant temp being below a certain level, and the interior heater being set to the 'Max' setting before it comes on.

What's it run on? diesel, electricity or nuclear reactor.
And how does it work?
And what does do? help the engine warm up quicker?
And more important I'VE GOT TWIN EXHAUSTS

God lord, last saw something like this was on a Volga - used to keep it nice and toasty warm I believe on winter nights

It certainly runs on diesel, but I've no idea what the internals of the thing will look like. I've always imagined they would work something like a very miniature oil-fired central heating boiler ??
The basic idea of them is that they warm the coolant (and the interior heater) up quicker, as Hdi's don't produce enough waste heat to warm the heater up quickly in cold weather.

That certainly make sense as the water pipes tee off the heater pipes
