BX 16 TRS - gearbox oil level screw

Unread post by czenda »

Hi, any idea about gearbox oil level check screw location on the BX 1.6 TRS BAY engine (88)? I could not locate the filler/level check screw (it is supposed to be one possibly vertically located hole). "Ole Heinie" says it is on the gearbox end cover. Does that mean the thin cup-like plate visible after removing left wheel? I am honestly confused, I only found the drain plug on the differential housing... Pls HELP!

On a TRS about 87-88. I believe the filler is at the top of the gearbox ??
Seem to remember some gearbox steel end casings had no side level/fill plugs. You needed to remove lower plugs from box and diff housings, drain and refill with a measured 2 litres ?? of oil.

Yep, that what Haynes says as well. I know it was the case on my old '85 TRS, but I am unsure about '88 since my Haynes only goes to '87 (this is on of the few "old" Haynes manuals that actually tells you something! even a breakdown of the gearbox and cross sections of all hydraulic components! Ah, those where the days . . ).

I had a fill plug in the area described; behind the plastic inner guard on the pressed steel end plate, 19mm as described, but, I also had an auto that had been converted to 5 speed manual so no guesses on the model.
If the filler/level plug doesn't exist, an old trick is to drain the entire transmission and refill via a funnel and a piece of suitable sized plastic hose through the hole the reversing light switch screws into. 1.8 litres is about right.
Oil must be straight 80 grade mineral - not 75/85 or synthetic. That is most important with these boxes.

This is only to say "Thanks" for the pieces of advice - worked fine. I would never think of putting the oil in through the reversing light switch opening.
Put in 1,8 l of the recommended 80 oil. Volume of the oil drained was 1.0 l.
Still, it is hard for me to understand the absence of the hole for checking the oil level (there is only a blind bulge instead of the 19mm bolt suggested). The gearbox is not a hermetically sealed spaceship, the oil will leak sooner or later...
Anyway, Thanx again.
