Clatter

My engine makes a bit of a clatter unitl its about say 1800 RPM.
it sounds like its coming from the area of the alternator? Saying this, the fan belt was knackered and had to replace it. its now slipping again. im just wondering if its the bearings on the alternator gone?

See what it sounds like with belt off. Or use a stethoscope (aka long screwdriver) on alternator. Check belt tensioner.

is it safe to run the engine with the blet off?

As the fan belt does not actually drive the fan but the alternator only its fine to run engine with it off - after all they do break and folks ignore the battery not charging light until its flat battery time!
