Project TZI part 2

Unread post by tomsheppard »

Following a fairly traumatic weekend, the exhaust was very properly fixed. New spheres went on the back and brake pads were bought.
[:I]PRM and David were right. This one has a lambda sensor. I disconnected it and the engine ran more roughly. I reconnected it and
put a tankful of fuel and some injector cleaner throught it as I had threatened. I suspect that a plug lead is breaking down occasionally
but for the moment, I'm using the car for a week. Yesterday's 100 mile run has convinced me that the petrol is much the nicer engine around town. Compared to the Diesels, it is smooth, responsive and quiet. The TZI is a good 'un, too, being much lighter to drive than the TZD. In all it feels like a much more refined car. The tired white paint is beginning to respond to polish and it risks looking quite smart soon. I suspect that the euphoria will wear off when I get the fuel bill for the week!

I used to like those TZi's, the GTi estate!

My 1991 Motronic GTI had 26mpg round town and 31 on a run. Driven fast or slow. Bit dear[}:)][}:)][}:)]

The TZi might be quiet around town but it can growl a bit on the motorway compared to the diesels - but then for some people that's seen as a good point. I'd agree with Tom - when working properly the TZi is a very refined car: the injection irons out the less attractive features of the older carb-fed petrol BXs(e.g. cold-starting and jerky town driving), and the torque of the 1.9 petrol lump is very useful. Shame about the mpg, though!

Due to a disintegrating tooth, I had to dash back to Southampton last night. That meant that 185 miles from fulfillment, I had a reference point for my engine fiddling.
29.5 MPG.
Happy with that. Still needs some fine tuning, so 35 on a run is possible.
I'd agree with David that the engine gets a little harsh at 4000+ but it is sweet up to cruising speeds. Seems to me that with a soft cam and a blower, there wouldn't have been any need (other than fashion) for the other 8 valves.
