309 would be my suggestion, lots of private owner miles where as many 405 were fleet miles. The little Citroen AX14D for more than 60mpg or a high milage Xantia with come in to the £500 bracket. If you head out of France then you'll find loads of old Cavilier and Escorts kicking about. Staying in Europe, a late Fiat Uno 1.7D., A Mercedes 200 series diesel from about 1980, Renault 5 and 19, and the old Rover 218D and a Golf. maybe ebay calls you.......

Ebay is probably best avoided unless the car is very local- my experience of buying and selling at this end of the market is that the motors in question are seldom as described, and you don't want to spend a lot of time and money travelling to look at junk- the best place is your local paper, or auction if you know what you're doing. As I said above, don't be too choosy over badge or spec and you will be able to find a good one!!

If you are running a car on a tight budget I'd seriously consider getting a small diesel so that you are in the low car tax bracket - £60-odd is easier to find that £90-odd and you'll benefit from lower insurance too. Go for a 1.5 diesel AX, 106 or other manufacturer (Corsa, Rover). Little diesels are long-life engines too; you'll get good mpg and have a simple and cheap car to maintain.
