45 mpg on the motorway doesn't sound unusual, at what speed?
Your town mpg depends on the town and your driving style.

That doesn't sound all that bad, the 1.9TD Xantia was never very economical for a diesel. I've always got around 42-44mpg on the motorway and about 38-39 mpg around town from mine.
This is with a 4 year long, 60000 mile continuous Italian tune-up though ! If you drive gently it should do a bit better than that.

After only two months, how can you be so precise that it returns 35mpg in town and 45 on motorway? I brim the tank on my 2.1 at every fillup, and all I can tell is that the average is 42 - 31 if I'm towing a caravan.

Eh? What does that mean? What on earth is a 'can of service' ?

JohnD: to know the (mpg) I brim my tank to a level I can see, reset the millage then drive for 100 miles and refill the tank to the same level, check how many miles and how much deisel needed, and work it out..

I get combined 45-47 mpg from my 1.9td. Normally get a around 640-660 to a full tank. Thats with a mixture of motorway and around town and I don't drive it very carefully but I neither accelerate too hard when it's not needed.

My 97 td is not keen on stop-start traffic and economy seems to suffer 35 mpg at best, get it on the motorway and at a steady 80-85mph seems to level out at 40-46mpg.
But the best I ever got was travelling from the coast with no money and no credit cards, Orange light was on stayed at 55mph all the way slipstreaming lorries most of the way, (not recommended) mangaged to eek out 60-63mpg (100 mile journey very boring)

My Mothers VW Jetta used to have an economy gauge in it, I used to be able to get the gauge up to 50 mpg at 60 mph by tailgaiting lorries, you had to get uncomfortably close before you got into the slipstream.
I thought 50 mpg was good fuel economy for a carb 1250 cc petrol engine and a car that size.
