MOT

Post by espzetec »

my 1.9td Xantia is in for its MOT this afternoon.
it will fail on wiper blades and sidelight bulb, which can be replaced easy.
other problems suspectwed are, the drivers seat belt sometimes will not budge till im driving and hit the brakes? will this fail?
Oil leak, not major but you can notice looking at bottom of the car.
manual locks are not working extrenally.
does all this constitute a fail?
also what other problems do your xantias have when going for its mot? come on folks spill the beans about common problems.

The sercurity of the car (door locks) as far as I'm aware are not part of the MOT. As for theoil leak should be OK as long as it's not p**ing out while the inspector is under the car poking about. The seat belt well that's an 'either way' offence I think.

The seat belts must work at the time of the test.
If the oil leak is really bad (tester's discretion) it will fail
Do you mean you cannot lock the car? Not a testable item.
Too late now, but wouldn't it have been easier to fix the wiper blades, bulb, and safety belt before the test, then it would have had a chance of passing, and avoid the inconvenience of having to go for a retest?
Inertia reels are usually just bunged up with fluff and crud, and can be cleaned and serviced.

The only thing you need for an MOT as far as locks are concerned is a locking petrol/diesel cap. I reckon it's always best to give them a couple of things to fail the car on (as long as you get a free re-test) as they tend to look harder if all appears OK!

It depends on the tester really.
Some testers become satisfied when they find one fault, others will let marginal things slide until they find something to fail the car on, then its the "it was going to fail anyway" attitude and every little fault is picked up as a failure point.

I'm with uhn113x on this. Much, much better to clear those small points before the test. Not doing that makes you look careless - you made no effort to prepare for the test. So the tester will respond accordingly. I'd sort the wiper blades and sidelight bulb at least - they need to be done anyway so why not do them now?

The seat belt is the thing it would fail on as these have to be in top condition and seen as working ie. locking when pulled hard.
Wipers and bulb normally are a fail but a tester says ' replace them' and gives you a pass. Locks aren't part of an mot, oil leaks can be if on the suspension but not on the engine unless contaminating something like the brakes or whatever. Get a new seat belt and go back.

The seat belt will be a fail if the testers doing his job properly- they need to pull it right out and examine its full length for tears, etc.

it locks when its pulled hard. you can get it out pulling very very gently. but to pull so gently its damn near impossible.
would a squealing auxillary belt (fan belt) cause a fail?

No, just an eventual failure to start.

Mine just passed. 3rd year running with no work done. And the tester did a great job of refitting the two child seats in the back (secured by seatbelts ;) )

FAO everyone,
it failed the MOT on the following, which have now been corrected - Blown bulb, & handbrake cable snapped.
apart from that its just dandy. not bad for a car 11 years old and with 140k
