Alternators

Post by Doc »

To add to my list of car woes, my girlfriends Pug 309 diesel decided to lunch its alternator drive belt because something in the alternator detached and jammed the rotor! Luckily this happened on a short, slow journey - but instead of stopping the engine, she drove back home.[:(!] The belt was completely toast and was laying in two parts on the undertray. (Could have been worse. I've seen broken power-steering/alt belts chew into cambelt cases and snap the cam belt!) Anyway, I took the alternator apart and found the pulley end bearing retainer had detached before finally falling into the rotor. It appeared the two machine screws holding it on had loosened through vibration. I have worked on a few alternators over the years but I have never seen anything like this before. The remains of the screws didn't appear to have any form of thread lock on them. The new ones certainly do!
