Some sounds stop any ideas for me, as well. More than 10 seconds of Radio 1, and my brain ceases to function altogether!
When you say high-pitched - is it a squeal, rumble, knock, what?
Does it stop if you press the brake lightly? (I am thinking of brake pads squealing)

My '97 306 TD has a high pitched noise that seems to come from the same area (passenger side) - it happens for about 10-15 minutes in the morning.
Its a difficult noise to explain, I can only think of describing it as a high pitched squeak! Its loudest when coasting and goes "eee ee eee eeee"!! When you accelerate it stops as if the shift in position of the engine has stopped it and then becomes apparent again when backing off. I wondered if it was coming from the engine mounts on mine...? It has done it for two years now just seems to do it for a bit longer than it used to these days! If, after driving to work in the morning, I go out at lunchtime then it doesnt seem to do it again but if i leave my car until 5pm then it does. Its definatley seems worse in the colder weather..
Let me know if you have any joy in tracking it down!

Have you changed the front tyres ?
I recently had both of my front tyres changed and on one side i got a funny noise that only appeared over 40mph and got louder !i found out it was one of the tyres was bad had it changed and ok now.
check if your wheel bearings are ok as well ? then the discs and brakes to see if they loosen up when the brake is eased off.

This is spooky my 97 td xant, goes eee eee eeee eeeeeee
as well, I have had the brakes to bits plenty of times but no good (half a tub of coppaslip later[V]), thought it was clutch bearing but its still there when you coast with your foot on the clutch, after about 2 miles it goes. Even after hanging out the passenger window at 50 mph for a mile and a half didn't help (not recomended very chilly)

Ah - different to razzleuk - his is going "eee ee eee eeee"!! [}:)][:D]
Sten - try swapping wheels front to rear, and look to see if anything (wear indicator wiring?) is rubbing on brake disc

Hi Again
had the car inspected at both front wheels and back wheel and still found nothing wrong, took it for a test drive after and found that turning right stop the squealing.

A good idea will be to jack up front and place 2 wheel stands underneath on the subframe.
Get an assistant to start car and run in first gear etc to get front wheels spinning, while ur underneath at the front diagnosing where the sound is coming from.
Leave the wheels on as well.
Please take all pre cautions neccessary before undertaking this kind of work
this will hopefully let u pinpoint the squeel and would save you hassle of doing 'dukes of hazzard' roadtests !
