steering rack

hi everyone,
just been told my steering rack is not working (hence my power steering being hard) .. just wanted to ask, can i get ANY steering rack from a scrap yard for my zx 16v? or does it have to be the correct model/year etc etc
also.. what are the symptoms of this not working? just incase the garage is trying to rip me off as ive been quoted £200

When you say not working, what do you mean? If it's leaking then that's obvious. Could be sticky or jerky which would mean the power ram seals have gone. As for replacing it, these days I'd go for a recon unit as to getting one from the scrappers. Cost about the same and wont get you dirty in the proscess of picking it up.
