Brake problems

Post by István »

Hello there,
I'm (hopefully) an proud new owner of a BX 16 TZI (powersteer) but before I sign anything there are some questions I want to ask to the specialists or anyone with experience on hydraulics of a cit.
The car I'm talking about is in good tech. condition (in other words: new brake pads/discs, new front spheres fitted, accumulator sphere tested and proved good, and looks good underneath)However, when driving it it brakes not the way I think it should be. It brakes in a rythm, like one time the brakes are on and the other time they are off the discs in a high tempo that decreases when the car reaches zero mph. The whole car is vibrating a lot when braking and the pedal hisses in the same frequenty.
My first thought was that there could be a disc problem (I still have to check them on being flat of shape/ not bent) but there is also a hydraulic thingy that can't be good:
in normal ride height with two people in it, at idle rev, the pressure regulator ticks in interval of 6 secs, way to small i'm told.
Those two things could be solved seperatedly or are eachothers cause but I just don't have the experience. On the Q & A Forum for BX one said if there was an ABS system on the car, but that I don't know.
In that case there are two problems and thus there should be an internal leak in the system.
How can I check all this?
Tonight I'm going to check the car thouroughly ( with the help of Volvo specialists, so there should be no great help on the hydraulics I guess) so can anyone suggest anything I have to check or look at or test (and how).
It sounds all a bit helpless, but I kind of feel like it....
It was a good testride (the car behaved very well) and want to have more (beware of the citroen virus..)
Oke, enough. anyway hope you can help me,
Hope to hear from you soon.
István

Brake pedal's, or to be more accurate brake valve's will hiss very slightly when the brake's are released after heavy use, the hissing sound is made by the high pressure oil as it passes through narrow clearance's in the valve, on it's return to the reservoir.
From your description of the hissing and vibrating having the same frequency, it sound's as though the car has ABS and with a serious fault.
If not that then an extremely serious brake disc defect, enough to cause feedback at the pedal, on a front disc this should be detectable through the steering.
It may not be wise to drive this car at speed on a public road.

My BX ticks at about the same rate as yours, every 6 secs. You can run a few simple tests to find out if your accumulator is faulty (although you say it has been replaced) or which components could be leaking internally. For a description of the tests have a look at www.geocities.com/MotorCity/6876/FAQ/faq_sus_001.html. As for the juddery braking I would hazard a guess at a faulty ABS. But then again I'm no expert <img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>.
