Other HDI tuning methods

Post by bencowell »

I have an East Coast Racing box on my C5, I note from their website that they publish the differences between analogue and digital tuning.

I'd have a read of all tuning companies websites before buying. Here are a few more:

£374!
As against about £140 off ebay!(for "analogue") - Still you pays your money and makes your choice as it were.

I canot see the advantage of the East Cost Racing Box (or other boxes) over the Upsolute (or other brand) OBD program reload. In fact, I only see disavantages:
- Upsolute much cheaper.
- OBD loading data, with no physical intervention on the engine (clean and impossible to detect).
- Upgrades possible.

Most of them don't mention whether they are analogue or digital so are probably the former!
I'm getting more confused the more I study the subject.
Here are 3 more:
www.speedbuster.co.uk
www.mrhoot.com
Which is the best?

I'm not starting the analogue v digital (I have digital) debate, but in my opinion, a removabele box is best because the dealer will never know it has been there.
"Invisible" remaps may not be physically spotted, but when the techie drives your car on the road he's sure to realise.

After the guarantee is gone, the only problem that may rise from the lack of invisibility of the tuning operation should only occur at the moment of selling the car. Am I right?

I suppose nothing - the insurance does not cover engine malfunction.

It is more than likley that the Insurance Companies will view chipping or a "box" as performance enhancing and therefore needing to be notified; bearing in mind how insurance diligently seek to reduce or refuse payments for an accident in the event of unnotified modifications to the car or engine, perhaps a second thought might be in order.

In that case, there is another point for "invisible" tuning - hidding it from the insurance company.

I worry about increased premium cost if you chip your car and tell the insurance company. I have no idea how much it would be, or , whether some companies wouldn't insure you at all.
At the same time, I have a suspicion that, If you rang your insurer and asked him how much it would cost you in added premium if you were to chip your motor, they would put you down as someone who likes speed and your next renewal would be be bumped up even though you hadn't gone ahead with the chip. They would have ticked a box on their database as a result of your inocent enquiry to flag up that you're some kind of nutter. Something similar to this happened to me a few years back. So, I would never enquire to the insurance company unless I was on the brink of going ahead.
So, would any of the forum members who have chipped their cars, and also owned up to the insurance company, let us know how much more it costs in premium. If its not too much, I may just be tempted (on my AUDI A4 2.5 V6 TDI.. I know I can't chip my Xantia..)

the diagnostic machines the dealers use can tell them exactly what software version is in the ECU,the date it was last updated/downloaded & the dealer that done it.
also worth noting that some of the injetion systems on the new generation HDi's (ie 1.4 & 1.6) have an 'anti-tune' ECU,no doubt its only a matter of time till someone finds a way around it though.

Well Superchips are already offering +20BHP upgrades for the new 1.6 TDCi and the 1.4 TDCi 70, so it didn't take them long!
