We were invited to our farmer neighbours birthday bash to be held today in a marque at a local church field.
The bash was a joint affair to celebrate his plus daughter & sister's birthday & was to be a pig roast (he's a pig farmer amongst other things) done by Eric le Sausage the local meat entrepreneur for about 100 guests.
The invite was to be there at mid-day so knowing how these things work, I declined as it's far too hot for me to be sat on a wooden bench under canvas for the interminable time these affairs inevitably take.
Mme being Mme accepted & me, having given my apologies, has stayed at home on dog sitting duty.
Mme has just messaged me to say that " needless to say they're still waiting to be fed".
No surprises there then & Dog knows what time she'll be home.
We've proprieters invites to the local chasse (hunt) bash at the end of this month where bucket loads of crevettes & wine , followed by something they've shot & spuds is consumed whilst sat on hard benches under canvas with similar start & indeterminate eating time is the norm.
Been to that gig about 20 times so far but seriously considering giving it a miss if temperature continues as it is.

Last year I actually found a good use for my old fishing umbrella while waiting for food at a BBQ, apart from keeping the sun off it also helped me avoid the winges and moans about the delay!!

You've obviously no idea how the Chasse works in France.
Indiscriminate banging away at anything that moves by pissed up hunters is rare & strictly punished if discovered.
Each local chasse has a limit to how many & when each type of bird/animal can be culled dependant on the area of ground they have to chasse over, hence our invite as our land counts towards the local totals even though I don't allow hunting on it. The head of each Chasse is obliged to ensure the rules are kept to & can be found responsible if they are not.
The limit is set by government agencies & is strictly policed.
"France regulates game kills and hunting limits through the Environmental Code (Code de l'environnement) and local prefectural management plans, permitting the pursuit of around 90 species with specific quotas, weapon capacities, and spatial restrictions"
Farmers can ask/demand the Chasse helps to keep down numbers of certain animals such as Wild Boar & Deer which can decimate fields overnight if unsustainable numbers are allowed to grow.
Without the Chasse & their governing rules France would be over run with wild animals.
Foxes et al are pretty much left alone unless killing chickens etc in which case the chicken owners mostly have shot gun permits & deal with them.
I don't belong to the local Chasse as I can't bring myself to kill an animal but respect their necessity & being a hypocritical carnivore never turn down the offer of some wild boar or venison if the chasse has been successful which it's often not.

You wanna see what they do over here starts off with a rag soaked in foxes urine , where would they get that from ive often asked myself, amd them involved with it only to get told to p**s off ... then it ends up with the animal being mauld to bits by the dogs , I look after 15 achers of small hold the damage ive had to sort out over the past 15 yrs is unbelievable plus expensive, ive not respect for them lot who bash through other people's land and homestead just so they can dress up amd chase after a small fox , sorry if this is off topic , I love all types of animals but not the ones who ride on the horses , arrogant all of them , end of ive said my bit that's it , sorry if its differnt where your are but hearing chase makes my blood boil, ive had to raise fox cubs after the mother was killed by this thing , ive also had to put them out of their suffering too because of this thing over here and it stinks

Don't be 'sorry if it's differnt(sic) where I am' . No hunting on horse back where I live although practised elsewhere in this vast country I believe.
I get your angst re indiscriminate & cruel hunting but please don't tar all hunters with the same brush.
