1.6hdi 110 2009 Peugeot 308 Camshaft Carrier Alignment

Unread post by kingjafad »

Hi all once again.
Just had a bit of calamity on my sons 308 1.6hdi (110hp) - so double camshaft with chain between them.
He broke down, AA claimed timing belt. Got it home, timing top cover taken off to check and belt is intact. Rotated engine by hand, put timing pins in Crank pulley and Camshaft pulley and they lined up perfectly (and not hitting any valves whilst turning by hand). There was however some loud spring back noise which i presume was valves returning to position as the lobes of the camshaft/rockers move past them (ive never heard that before on other cars).
Anyway, I thought as the AA had been turning the key, if anything was going to be bent it would already be bent.
I tried to start it, sounded like dead battery/weak starter. Winner I thought. Charged battery, no change, changed starter and it seemed to want to turn over but made a worrying noise. I stopped checked the timing again by rotating by hand and it was still in time (pinned) but when i turned it a bit further one of those spring noises happened and then it got locked against what seems like a stuck valve (it wont turn clockwise any further).
I am assuming its a valve stuck out and the timing is gone somewhere in the camshaft area.
Anyway long story, even longer, I started taking everything apart in preparation for cylinder head removal (yup, its scrap otherwise so nothing ventured nothing gained.) I see in Docbackup (peugeot instructions) that there is another special tool to align the camshaft carrier back on (0194-N).

This is me hopefully assuming I get the camshaft carrier off and find the problem before getting to a stuck valve.
Does anyone know what size the pegs are (0194-N), ie can i simply use appropriate size drillbits like for the timing pegs.?

As is often the way with my brain lately. I think a bit deeper and the solution appears. So i already have the timing pins, the 8mm for camshaft, the 5mm ones for crank pulley (and presumably fuel pump) and there was another that i use to put in the flywheel hidden behind the flexi exhaust. Seems that one is a good fit for the camshaft cover assembly (maybe 0.2-0.3mm small but close enough) - Caliper says its 11.5mm in diameter, and it only goes less than an inch deep so to get a good grip/positioning as the cover assy comes down on it, i'd say 30mm plus is enough of a length. Just thought i'd put that out there. Maybe someone knows the exact dimensions but if you have found this post, and you are in the same position, hopefully this will help.

Update1: Just putting this out there incase someone ever does this too and is looking for guidance/help
So i got the camshaft carrier assembly off - and found the timing chain tensioner between the 2 camshafts had smashed itself apart (thereby timing off by a bit)- it was exactly like in this video (time 28:23). However with the camshaft carrier off, the valves all closed and the crankshaft turns completely freely now so by my logic i dont have any bent valves (at least i am pushing forward under that assumption - nothing to lose really).
I also cleaned out the holes for the alignment of the actual assy for refitting - the 2 holes are M12 - when i get that far (after replacing the cam chain+tensioner) i will sit 2 M12 bolts in to align all the 8mm bolt holes and the injector stud holes.
