2.7 HDI (UHZ) Lifting Advice

Unread post by HelioMV »

Hi everyone.

The avengers have finally assembled nearly a year on from buying my C6 and I have nigh on finished up with the new 2.7 HDi engine to go in!

The issue is now is that I have to do some actual work and remove the engine and box. The manual says to use a hydraulic table and some special tooling (which I can make if needed) but I am wondering if anyone has had any success with using a standard engine lift to support it from the top and lower it, rather that support it underneath and lower it down. I can't see any proper good lift points that I can sling around.

I am getting better with engine lifts and have been making short work of engine swaps in the past couple of weeks but this one has me stumped, has anyone got any insight, or should i just do it the way the manual says? I am very conscious of not usiong things like exhaust manifold studs and bits on the head etc.

Thanks in advance!!

You may, or may not, get some ideas from this video, I haven't watched it myself!! :)

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

You'll find it nigh on impossible to take it up or down!
Take the front end off (bumper, cooling pack etc) and it'll come out the front using a standard engine crane.
You will need to get the car in the air to remove the exhaust joints, driveshafts and I find it easier to get the rear torque mount from the RHS arch using a couple of long extensions. There's a some cable connectors down the back of the engine and the vacuum pipes to the rear torque mount you need to watch out for. Also, the starter motor cables can be a bit of a challenge to get to.

I've done a few now and can probably get the lump out in about 4-5hrs.

I use a load leveler and bolt to the lifting point on the front left (looking from the front). On the RHS, remove fuel filter unit and it's mounting bracket. This should free up a few bolts you can use. Elsewhere, it's a case of finding what you can.

If you're using slings I would go around the gearbox below the RHS mounting or around the torque mounts front and rear and somewhere under the front pulley or possibly the LHS engine mounting but that's putting a lot of faith in 4x 8mm bolts!

Being a V engine it'll be a bit difficult to sling without risking damage to other, mainly plastics components, on the top of the cyl heads

Sorry to be an idiot but could you send me a diagram, reference or photo of where these lift points are. I won't be using slings but a spreader bar is a great idea!
