Parking Sensor Unavailable

Unread post by Tombo002 »

Evening folks, I know this question has been asked time and time again so go easy on me please, im hoping mine is slightly different than the rest.

Basically, long story short. bought a relay L3H2 2022 plate. Didn't realise when I got it that it had no reverse lights until sometime after, (reversing in the dark) Did all usual checks fuse, bulbs etc. Put it down to gearbox switch. Here's where it gets interesting... Removed the old one, plugged it in whilst holding it and pushed the pin down with the ignition on.. Boom! everything works as it should, lights come on and the super irritating buzzer comes to life... im thinking hallelujah it must have been a sticky switch 🙌 nope! put it back in, fire it into reverse... nothing, so initially I thought maybe the pin has worn down, so I ordered a new one. Exact same happens, works if I push pin in with finger but not once its installed. So went on to ebay ordered a generic one which has a slightly longer pin, thunking maybe theres something a bit worn inside the gearbox..please please work... nope still not working.

So now basically I have 3 gearbox switches and no reverse lights. Tbh I dont care for the reverse lights, as I've installed a cracking camera. But... It's an MOT fail come January, also the warning light on the dash drives my OCD through the damn roof.

I know in new to this forum but id appreciate any and all help. If someone suggests having to get gearbox looked at i think I might have a nervous breakdown :rofl2:

Thanks guys

It should be. That's the warning it throws up on the dashboard as soon as i turn the key. Funny thing is there was no warning when I bought the van only after I removed the switch.

Possibly a broken wire at the switch end that works when the wiring is moved as you remove the switch. Leave the switch in place, unplug its connector, put the gears into reverse (engine off), then use a volt meter set on resistance and check across the switch contacts/earth to see if the switch is then working - if so it may be the wiring.

I'll give that a try this weekend. I'll happily try anything that doesn't involve getting the gearbox looked into. Thanks

You can check the operation of the switch independently of all the wiring by just measuring the resistance with a multimeter.

I have a vague memory of someone reporting a similar problem where the think inside the gearbox that presses against the switch had come loose or fallen off.

Thays exactly what I think has happened, I'm all out of ideas, I'm thinking im going to have to try wire some kind of external switch so when the linkage pushes into reverse it will throw on the lights. for when the MOT is due, not ideal 🤦???

Reversing lights never used to be inspected as part of the MOT. Are they included now?

A quick look in the MOT manual says vehicles from 1/9/2009 must have reversing lights and they have to work. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspect ... tion-4-6-1

Yeah after 09 they have to illuminate automatically when you put it into reverse and go off once its knocked out of gear. Otherwise I'd be happily enough just to leave it be.
