Alert: "Clutch temperature high" on Berlingo K9 (1.5 BlueHDi) - Persistent Chime

Unread post by miguelangelprog »

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out to see if anyone has dealt with a persistent and likely false alert on a 2018 Citroën Berlingo (M 1.5 BlueHDi 100 S&S).

The Issue:
For the past two weeks, I’ve been getting the following warning message:

"Clutch temperature high: limit use of the clutch pedal"

Symptoms:

The alert starts immediately after starting the engine, even when the car is stone cold (first start of the day).
It chimes every 10 seconds.
Sometimes, after driving for a while and restarting, the sound disappears temporarily, but it eventually comes back.
The clutch feels mechanically fine—no slipping, no burning smell, and the car drives perfectly.

Since this is a manual gearbox and the car is cold when it happens, I suspect it’s a software glitch or a faulty sensor (Clutch Pedal Position sensor?).
Has anyone found a permanent fix for this? Does the BSI or Engine ECU require a specific firmware update, or is there a "clutch biting point" recalibration (re-learning) that can be done via DiagBox to stop this?

Any help or technical insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

This warning is apparently caused by the relative speed of the wheels and engine not matching, taking into account the known gear ratios. We have not had anyone on this forum report a successful fix, but on other forums it has been reportedly due to a faulty wheel speed sensor, or due to an incorrect transmission being fitted. I can't see how these faults can be detected if the vehicle has not moved since startup.

Marc had trouble with his C3 with a faulty wheel speed sensor, but it was also giving a raft of other warnings. Is this the only warning? Needs a scan to look for any fault codes and the live data. Maybe there is a gearbox input speed sensor that has gone wonky.

Thanks for the replies

Yes, this is the only warning. There are no ABS, ESP, or Engine Check lights on the dash. No other "raft of warnings", just this annoying clutch chime every 10 seconds.

Might be worth a check of the clutch pedal position sensor in live data - perhaps it is reading off and the ECU thinks the clutch is partially pressed?
