Putting my 308 in to storage for a year

Unread post by Auldalliance »

I'm about to head off travelling for a year. Against my wife's wishes and possibly better judgement, I've decided not to scrap the '08 308 with 200k on the clock, instead I'm going to park it up while I'm away.

It's too late to do anything else with it, I leave on Saturday and I'm in the middle of nowhere, so this is actually an easier option than scrapping it anyway!

It's got a broken coil spring at the moment, and the engine light is on slowing a pollution sensor fault. I reckon that's because when I was changing the starter recently, I had to disconnect the MAF and I've likely not put all of that back together quite right. So there's really no point telling to sell it.

It might be an old bag of bolts but I really like this car... £35/yr tax, dirt cheap to insure, 62mpg (now that I've fixed the injector leak 😂), and it's pre DPF. What's not to like!

I'm planning on taking all four wheels off, but I'm not sure where I should support it? I don't fancy leaving it on the sill jacking points.

Should I disconnect the battery?

Expect a lot of questions in about a year's time when I try to bring it back to life 😂

Definitely disconnect the battery. It may not survive 12 months of disuse, but it has a better chance if disconnected.

The front of the car can be supported by the subframe behind the engine,. I don't think that there is an easy alternative at the rear.

Leave the hand brake off so the pads (or rear shoes if drums) do not stick to the discs as the discs rust.

If it has an alarm the siren back up batteries will go flat but as they do it might go off annoying others.

Yes definitely brakes off!
Last time I had it parked up for a while was to change the starter, and one rear wheel was badly bound after that.

Other than leaving the brakes off, anything that I can do to avoid that happening again?

I have slipped a stiffish piece of polythene between pads and discs in the past to stop them binding when parked up. :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

I like that idea!
Car is now up on stands with the wheels away in the shed. Tarp over the top. Battery disconnected.
I bagged up each wheel hub in a bin liner, after dousing everything with WD40. Maybe it'll slow down the rust, maybe it'll just trap moisture, who knows.

My wife gives me a 5% chance of getting it back on the road...
