EGR clean no click 1.6hdi

On engine shutdown my pre-2011 1.6hdi is making an electronic whine but no click that I had on a previous engine.
I assume this means that the EGR valve is not cleaning itself as intended?

Sorry to say I have no idea on this one but I'm sure someone else will be able to comment :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!
