Check the glow plugs with a multimeter. Remove each connector and measure resistance between the glow plug terminal and engine ground.
The typical value should be 0.5–1.5 Ω
If you get..
- infinite / OL -> Glow plug dead
- very high resistance -> Glow plug failing
- normal resistance -> Wiring fault likely
Check the connectors for corrosion and the wiring harness for breaks and clean as required. If you replace the glow plugs, replace all four at the same time. If you can't get the plugs out, there are specialist companies that do just glow plug removal. hth!

Thanks for that. If i can get them out is it not quicker to apply 12v directly for a second?
Also is 3 & 4 right side of engine looking down?

That assumes the glow plugs come out without a problem. If they're firmly jammed in place you could end up having to replace a good one that you've broken. If they measure OK in situ with a resistance check then you can put the problem off until another day.
Cylinder 4 is at the the front of the engine where the timing belt, alternator, etc are.
Cylinder 1 is at the rear where the gearbox is.

This is wrong, Cylinder 4 is other end, cylinder 1 is crankshaft pulley end , took 3 & 4 out tested dont work.Paul-R wrote: 11 Mar 2026, 09:30 Cylinder 4 is at the the front of the engine where the timing belt, alternator, etc are.
