Good morning...so I've allowed for the garage to carry out the work on my ds3, this will be a new steering rack...is it rude to ask for the old one? They rang yesterday to ask what my decision was ( to either fix it or not)...they've told me that the rack ECU couldn't be repaired so I'd have to get the whole thing replaced and said they couldn't have my car on the ramp for too long ( after sating "no" to putting my car back together if I didn't want to fix it). This will cost me £1200 ( which is indeed a lot less than what citroen quoted me for the same job, £2500) and when I ask if this will fix the ESP/ ABS warning lights they still said that they can't guarantee it will. Would it be rude to ask for the old steering rack back when I go pick up " my repaired car?
Could I ask for old parts back after replacement?

No, not at all rude. But make sure you ask for the old unit back before the job is completed as they might have a very good recycling policy and it might quickly be recycled otherwise.

Is it a refurbished rack, ot a new one? If it's refurbished then it's very possible the company who refurbished it would want the old one back, or forfeit a deposit.
But generally, it's you part, so there is no reason why they should keep it. You buy a new pair of shoes and the shoe shop doesn't ask for the old ones back.

Thank you all soo much for your answers...also, should a refurbished rack be the same cost as a new one ( or vice versa)? Could they be putting any old rack and charge me for a new one? I will ring this garage in s bit to ask them to keep my old rack...I'm sure I'll come back here with more questions

Refurbished racks should cost a lot less than a new one. I would also get the old one back and if needed you could get it refurbished if later you want to use it, or even sell it. I have quite a few times asked for old parts back, if only to take apart and see what was wrong with them.
It is quite possible the £1300 lower cost than at a Citroen dealer is the difference between a new rack and a refurbished one so definitely you need to check.

Re: Could I ask for old parts back after replacement?
Thank you all for helping...by what they had said a few days ago my rack ECU couldn't be fixed/ refurbished by any of the companies/repairers they contacted so the quote of £1200 is for a new steering rack (labour included)...does this sound right? I've done a quick google search and a steering rack for a ds3 like mine goes around £700-900
the garage has confirmed that I can have the old rack back, hope they do keep it
