Hi all
I used my mate's Thinkcar to diagnose the Xantia. It came up with three faults which all intermittent.
Intermittent fault. Flow sensor signal. Open Circuit or Short Circuit to Earth.
Intermittent fault. Fuel Low Pressure Pump Supply. Open Circuit or Short Circuit to Earth.
Intermittent fault. 3rd Piston Deactivating Device .Short to Earth or Open Circuit.
I have been focussing on the 3rd piston solenoid.
Hopefully, it never ends badly but I bought a powerprobe at the weekend and proceeded to probe. Applying power to the power side of the connector and earth to the earth side. The earth is switch by the ECU at pin 80.
I have tested the wiring with a bulb and it lights so that is good.
I have checked terminal tension on the wires at the connector. All good.
When I apply power or ground, I do not hear the solenoid click but when I disconnected the connector and earthed with the power probe and applied power to the power side I can hear it click so the solenoid is good.
My mate suspects the ECU is not switching as I did too but I stripped it and it looks good inside. I get continuity between Pin 80 and Pins 19/20 of the HQFP64 Bosch 30344 IC Chip.
Just wondering what else I can check and if anyone on the forum here as ever dabbled with powering ECU out of car and knows where to probe to see why it isn't switching earth.

It was what Malcolm (Citronut) always said. Roger will recognise it.mickthemaverick wrote: 19 Jan 2026, 14:49I might be being thick here but I don't get that Steve?![]()
You may be unfamiliar as he died about the time that you joined.

It's not Mick's fault that our dear friend Malcolm died. Sounds like he lost the will to live when Mick joined.myglaren wrote: 19 Jan 2026, 15:21It was what Malcolm (Citronut) always said. Roger will recognise it.
