Yet Another DPF Clogging error

Unread post by ne8ryan »

Hello everyone,
Just scoured the forums to see if my issue was similar to anyone else's but doesn't seem to be the case.

Just recently had the EOLYS fluid pouch replaced and levels reset (I have a previous post of when it was completed)

However, weird situation, I was coming upto speed on a slip road, 3rd gear 3.5k revs give or take and then service light came on with the warning of "Risk of clogging" however, it went away as soon as I shifted into 4th, the car was upto tempature. The last large journey was after christmas time, 80 mile there and back where I could do 65-70mph consistently..

So I tried to do the Italian method to and whack it into 4th at like 60mph.to try and force a regeneration but then the same error came up until.i shifted gears.

I am happy to do a motorway 40mph dash at 3.5k revs to try and regen but that error scares me when it pops up.

I am due a trip to Liverpool next month to see some friends (may be this month) where ill be servicing my car at the same time because why not and my friend is mechanically sound, he suggested some squirty stuff from amazon to put down a pipe and try and clean it and he also recommended to use a bit brake cleaner to clean some sensor(s).

Just looking for some knowledge at this point, thanks lads.

I'd suggest you try a DPF cleaner in the car. You will find all the info at this site: https://yourcar.co.uk/best-dpf-cleaner/ :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Hey mate, cheers for the response. I've just recently used RedEx DPF Cleanerm maybe 200 mile ago.

My friend recommended to do a DPF clean via the sensor, so i'll pick up a can of K2 whilst we are servicing the car.

You can certainly try the cleaner-in-a-can, I did, but don't be too disappointed if it doesn't work.

Around the same age that requires the Eolys fluid replaced, the DPF is getting full of non-combustible ash and cerine, and the best way to deal with that is to take it off the car and wash it out. I've posted about that before, search my older posts.

Without using a diagnostic tool to read live data and any fault codes, anything here is guesswork. The oddity you have is the "risk of clogging" message should take several restarts to go away once it has appeared.

What's even weirder is, about a 20 minute drive away when I went to take the dog for a walk, it happened again a few times, same situation - high revs, low gear and the light and warning comes up, change gear it went off after 5 seconds give or take, but this happened two or three times on the way there, however on the way back, not one alert about it.

Would it be damaging if I travelled from Newcastle to Liverpool in the next week or two and attempted the K2 spray, or do you think it would be okay, and also, would I need to do the italian method?

If the dpf is blocked the higher revs will be giving a higher back pressure and hence the warning in low gears. If you have a diagnostic tool that can read the dpf pressures it should help confirm the problem. If it is full of ash then cleaning off the car might be the only way to clear it.

Our Cactus 1.6 hdi service schedule has check of the clogging of the dpf at 96k miles and then every 16k miles so this might give an indication of expected life.

Unlikely to be a problem, but my crystal ball is at the menders. :-D

What to bear in mind with all this talk of "italian tune ups" and the like. The DPF is designed to trap soot and particulates, and periodocally burn it off, leaving behind some non-burnable material. Ash and cerine.

High rpm etc, can get the exhaust hot enough to put the DPF into a passive regen, which burns off the soot, leaving behind some ash and cerine.

If the backpressure builds up, additional fuel and load forces the DPF into an active regen, which burns off the soot, leaving behind etc.

The problem with age is that ash and cerine builds up inside the filter to a point that it is the blockage, not soot, and the filter is designed to catch particulate matter. In short - you can't blow it out by driving. The filter does it's job and retains the material.

Have a look at the off-car cleaning option. The DPF isn't all that hard to remove, and the results will likely be better. I tried a cleaner-in-a-can and it did near enough nothing, the off-car cleaning worked.

Thanks for the information. The only unfortunate thing is I will only be in Liverpool for the day so not able to do the 12 hour soaking that the videos show to do, if there is another method im not familiar with, please let me know, cheers.

As a DIYer, not really.

Try the cleaner-in-a-can, you're nothing to lose except a tenner or so.

Ahh right, cheers mate - any gotos for you for any cleaner-in-a-can solution?
My pal said he would spray down the o2 sensor pipe, also said he would be happy to take the dpf off and gentley scrape the soot off.

If he's happy to take the dpf off then I'd go for the 30 minute soak in dilute hydrochloric acid (Brick Acid from Wickes)(I used an old baby bath) then forward and back flush with a low pressure hose and dry with a hot air gun before refitting! :)

No. The stuff I bought didn't work.

Seriously - go read some of my older posts about all this stuff.

That looks as though it's the same, or similar, to Eolys for lowering the combustion temperature of the DPF. They claim other benefits so sounds like cleaners are mixed in as well.
