1978 PEUGEOT 504 DIESEL SALOON

Post by bikeboyz »

I have acquired a 1978 504 Saloon as a project car for restoration. Surprisingly its body and subframes are in rather good condition. Some questions I hope all you Peugeotists can help with. The model is a GL Auto, however when the autobox gave up the ghost some years back the previous owner replaced the engine and gearbox with an XD2, 2.3 diesel and 4 speed manual straight out of a estate model. His project of the time was never quite finished and the car dry stored until now. Sadly he passed away.
I need to pick your brains on the following please. The speedo isn't operating, and it looks like it isn't connected to the gearbox. When I replace the missing cable will the speedo read the correct MPH? as the two gearboxes of course are totally different?
The exhaust wasn't completed, and whilst the like of Kwik Fit can source and supply a new one, listed as 504 2.3D 1979-1982 is there going to be any difficulties in size or shape in the petrol body?
And finally, whats the parts situation like for suspention and steering pieces, I dont particularly want to be phoning Peugeot Kenya or Nigeria !!
thanks.

The petrol and diesel bodies should accept either exahust as they are the same. The 505 is pretty similar mecanically and you will find a lot more of those in the breakers yards.
Try these pretty knowledgeable places for 504 help:

Thanks, been doing some surfing, have to say if anybody else has a 504 or just interested there is a great web site http://www.504.org there is a complete microfilm type parts catalogue, which a lot of parts numbers register on Peugeot parts computer even now (its dated 1968 !). Sadly GSF don't catalogue any 504 parts :-(
