C5 2003 auto button

Can someone explain the function of the 'AUTO' button on the Citroën C5 headlight stalk?

From memory, you push/hold the button on the end and it sets the lights to come on automatically when it is dark. Should be mentioned in the handbook.

For the auto lights to be set the button might need to be pressed/held with the dash lit up or possibly with the engine also running. I had it turned off on our car so the lights did not come on whilst putting it in our garage. I have a mirror at the end so I can see down the side of the car and would be dazzled if the lights came on.
