Citroen Relay injector failure

Unread post by Lemonjelly4 »

First time poster

I own a 2020 118k Relay with DW12 2.2hdi engine 5 weeks ago it decided not to work anymore.
As you can see from the photos epic failure. 90% sure injector no.2 has decided to commit suicide taken valves, cylinder and scoring the bore. No.3 has markings of injector
I'm very surprised it has cause so much damage and basically scrapped the engine

As per the above, ouch! You're right #3 does look like it had a bad injector & what's left of #2 also looks to have had the "mark of the beast" as it were. cylinder #1 doesn't look the healthiest either, could just be the lighting but it looks very glazed/washed out compared to #4 which I fancy I can actually see some honing marks still.

Not heard great things about these newer DW12s but generally seemed more bottom-end issues so a little surprised at this carnage. I wonder though, maybe #2 ran a bearing and the piston started kissing the valves until they fatigued? Was the engine generally quiet or a little noisier than usual before it shat the bed?

Hi there and sorry for your trouble.
Your post attracted me as I also have a Relay van but with DW10FU engine, 2,0L from 2016 with much more Km. It is the second engine, it was changed at around 450K (km) ODO and now with this engine it has around 580K. What is the status of the engine head: camshafts, rockers etc.? How do you explain that an injector failure only caused this huge damage? And I don't think your trouble happened suddenly, it must have been some warning signs.
Anyway, good luck to find another working engine with minimum wear.
Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it!
