Eolys or Not Eolys

Unread post by stephensdg »

Hi.

I have a DS3 1.6hdi Blue 120. Recently, the 'Engine Fault' message came up on the dash/radio screen. I've used my iCarsoft FR V2.0 to have a look and initially it discovered that it had an 'intermitent misfire'. This weekend I thought I'd have another go with the diagnostic tool - it asks about ECU/Control Unit models that I don't know the details of. I had a look but can't see any model/version details on the ECU.

However, this time it gave the code P1446 21 'calculated additive level below the critical threshold'. I had a very quick look under the car and can't see what I thought would be an eolys tank or pouch (although pouches are housed in a plastic tank-like box aren't they?).

Is it possible to tell from registration/VIN if my car has the eolys system?

Thank you kindly in advance :-D

What year is the car? How many miles has it done?

I thought it would have tank, like my 308 does, but this video seems to indicate it's a pouch.

Its a 2014 and has done 111k.

Yeah, I've seen that video but I can't see anything that looks like that on my car.

This video agrees that it's a pouch. And, as a bonus, he knows the difference between a bolt and a nut!

I think, the fact that I can't see a container like that in the vicinity or my fuel tank or adblue tank is leading me to think that my initial thoughts (I don't know if I read it somewhere...or was told by a mechanic or something) might be correct and that there is no eolys system on my car.

I've messaged Citroen support to see if they can confirm. Surely though, someone must know from the VIN?

VIN is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff].

Unless the car is an import from a country that has laxer emissions control standards or the system has been (illegally) removed I don't see how that's possible. Your car is 2014 and is slap bang between my 2013 C5 and 2015 308, both of which have Eolys additive systems. It wasn't until later on when the 1.5 BlueHdi was introduced that the need for Eolys to help the DPF was discontinued.

That makes total sense. I'll get it up on the ramps and have a more in depth search. Would be just like me to have missed it behind a heat sheild or something!

Thanks Paul-R

Our 2016 Cactus with the blue 1.6 hdi has eolys, it was filled up by the dealer a few weeks ago for £357 as well as the diagnostic done so the car knows it has been filled. Funny they call it blue since adblue is clear and if spilt it dries out to white crystals.

On our C5s the fuel tank filler cap had magnets in them which worked a switch when removed/put back so the car knew it had been filled up with diesel - maybe your car has this and something to check. I can not check the Cactus since it is 30 miles away.

I think that was for the early systems. It meant that if you made a habit of topping up when it was only half empty that it went through the Eolys relatively quickly as the system had to assume that it was a fill-up from empty.

Later systems (without magnets) actually monitor the fuel level sensor and put a measured amount of Eolys in when it detects that the level of diesel has gone up. It has to be at least 10 litres added to trigger this IIRC.

My car is a DS7 Crossback 2.0 Blue HDi, 177 hp Performance Line from 2019. I don't know if it has the eolys system, but recently the 'Engine Fault' message came on. I'm definitely going to the service center. Any advice would be helpful.
