Berlingo 2001 HDi not starting

Unread post by MarkA67 »

Hey, tried posting this on the Berlingo forums site nearly a month ago but no luck, so having a go here. I've got a 2001 Berlingo 2.0 HDi which no longer starts. It'll crank but won't actually fire up. I've noticed there's no whirring noise anymore when I turn the key so I suspect the lift pump isn't engaging. I've also noticed when I turn the key that the hazard lights come on by themselves which I can turn on and off fine with the switch, but if I turn the key off and then back on the hazard lights come on again. Not sure if it's related as I've read that it could be an immobiliser issue (which might explain why the lift pump isn't working) but this was Google AI that told me this so not sure how trustworthy it is!

I've managed to get hold of a Haynes but sadly it doesn't have any wiring diagrams in regards to the lift pump. My plan was to bypass the ignition altogether and send 12v to the pump with a power probe to eliminate that as being faulty. I've found a fuse in the engine bay which is apparently for the "Diesel Injection Pump", not sure if this is the same thing. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas of things I could check or even a wiring diagram for the lift pump so I can eliminate that.

Thanks :)

I'd suggest the best thing to do is a diagnostic scan, ideally with Diagbox and see if you have any fault codes stored. :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Have you checked if the battery is charged up enough ? If the starter is not turning the engine fast enough it might not start. You could try something like easy start to check if it is a fuel problem.
On many cars if the key is left in the ignition and the driver's door is opened a warning is given. If you used to get this but not now then it might be the key is not being recognised by the immobiliser.

This is classic symptoms of a tripped inertia switch, and also the fact the fuel pump is no longer priming.
Did it cut out whilst driving?
The inertia switch should be on one of the strut turrets O/S from memory, try pushing it down to re set it.
If there was an immobiliser issue you would get a flashing key warning light on the dash & beeping if the key is not detected, also on this model if the key is not detected it does not stop the low pressure fuel pump operating.
