I've got a '98 2.1 Estate Xantia and mine also averages around 40mpg from fill to fill. But I find the speedo and mileometer read about 5% higher than actual - so does that bring the average down to 38??? The figure for the 90 HDI is 49.6mpg.

Xantia 1999 90 hdi estate around town light load 38 mpg. On a run A14 and single carrageway 'A' roads to Norfolk, 3 adults 1 youth small amount of luggage, 42 to 44mpg. Recent trip to France holding between 130-140ks, fully laden, 40mpg. I have only ever managed to get over 44 mpg and that was in France, 200 miles of driving around French lanes 4 up with a small amount of luggage and get this, not much time in 5th gear got 47mpg. That figure I really do not understand and yes the tank was brimmed at the same garage and at the same pump. The car is serviced by an dependable independant citroen specialist. I have never acheived 50mpg from it whether I drive it conservatively or not.
Hope this is of some use

Jon

Perhaps there is some truth in the rumour that French diesel is better....
