It's quite likely to be an LED unit and the individual LED chips are not replaceable.
Did the complete unit suddenly stop working or did it gradually lose the LED elements? If the latter then it's likely you need a complete new unit but if the first then it may be a broken wire. The most likely position for the break is inside the flexible loom between the body and the tailgate.
