Hi all,
Newbie here, need to pick some brains :
I have a peugeot boxer motorhome
1999
1.9td xud
Sometimes when I pick it up from storage it starts up ko.orobs but when I drive it seems very underpowered, heavy black smoke ( more than normal ) and I hear a fluttering noise which sounds like it's coming from the exhaust as I rev out just before I change gear.
It does dissappear, sometimes after 5 miles other times after 10 miles, it just clears and it stops smoking and pulls well.
Majority of times it starts and drives fine but just recently it feels like it's happening more often and only happens when it's been not run for a while as in days or a cpl weeks. Someone mentioned wastegate actuator ? Or wastegate itself sticking ? I don't know as diesels are not my thing. It's done around 80000 miles and apart from the interment problem runs fine, any ideas ?
Thanks in advance

Re: Newbie with a problem
That certainly sounds like a wastegate/turbo related problem which eases as it warms up. Can you get a diagnostic done to see what codes it throws up?
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Thanks for the reply, it doesn't have an ecu, it's an early xud fully mechanical type engine, ta

Re: Newbie with a problem
A 1999 XUD9TE will have EGR, I wonder if that is sticking open. That would give too much exhaust gas flow (back into the inlet, displacing oxygen) and hence black smoke.
It's not, legally, advisable to blank it permanently, but a short term blanking of it would confirm the diagnosis.
It's right on the back of the engine (that is canted over away from you too!) so a pig to get at. Can't recall where it connects to inlet manifold but a blank here would be my suggestion. EGR valve is screwed to the exhaust manifold and might respond to taking off and cleaning out. It'll be full of soot.
Inlet will also have a fair build up (though not terrible at only 80,000 miles) but getting that off is a big job. I recommend fire for cleaning the manifold out!

Re: Newbie with a problem
Hi again, had its mot today and mot tester had a a quick look under the bonnet and he noticed when revving the engine that the pipe coming out of intercooler was collapsing , so it coukd be intercooler blocked. Does anyone know a good mechanic in or around Coventry I could take motorhome to and let them diagnose it ? Prefer one that knows these older engines thanks

Re: Newbie with a problem
Sorry, I can't help with recommending a mechanic, I do most things myself. I am less familiar with the XUD9TE with a front mounted intercooler (as the top mounted variant - e.g. as on my previous 306, there isn't a hose after the intercooler - it's direct mounted onto the inlet manifold itself) so I'm not sure quite how buried it is - potentially ahead of the coolant radiator so worst case would need to loosen or even drain and detach that too - but clean out (partial fill with diesel and "slosh it about" - perhaps oily residue from PCV system is cause of the issue) isn't too complex to attempt as DIY.Pauluk wrote: 23 Sep 2025, 20:04 Hi again, had its mot today and mot tester had a a quick look under the bonnet and he noticed when revving the engine that the pipe coming out of intercooler was collapsing , so it coukd be intercooler blocked.
