Citroen Xsara (N2) 2.0 HDI(90) Engine Temp.

Unread post by Neger_Emerson »

Hy guys!
Sorry for my bad English.

I have a 2002 Citroen Xsara Break (N2) 2.0 HDI (90). It's a DW10TD/RHY engine. My big question is, what is the engine's operating temperature? Mine runs at 75°C. A little higher in the summer. Is this normal? I thought the sensor was bad, but I measured the water, the pipes, the expansion tank with a laser thermometer and it measured 75°C. According to the part number, all the thermostats open at 83°C, the one in the car is there too, but it doesn't even reach that temperature. Is this normal or could there be a problem?

This is a question for our more experienced diesel members and hopefully one of them will come on and advise. In the meantime I can say that running at a lower temperature is unlikely to do any damage although efficiency and hence economy may be reduced. :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Looks as if the thermostat needs replacing. You can check the temperature it starts to open by feeling the radiator top hose, it ought to start to get warm at 83°C but I suspect yours is opening before this so the engine does not get warm enough.

I work in a place where there are a lot of cars, when a diesel Citroen comes along I ask everyone what the temperature of the water is, I haven't seen one that was 90C. That's why I'm interested in whether this is normal because then I won't change the thermostat

75^C is indeed too low.
It should run around 83-85^C

Thermostats do not last forever and yours could be 23 years old. If due a coolant change then do it at the same time. With the engine a bit warmer fuel economy should improve and the cabin will heat up better. Anyway, once you do the radiator top hose temperature check you will have a good idea if yours needs replacing.
