Awning remote control repair.

Unread post by Vic Evans »

I was changing button batteries on one of our awning radio remotes when I realised one of the three operation buttons had fallen off the circuit board.
The things are tiny buttons about 3 x 2 mm in a cage not much bigger which sit on the circuit board with male stepped button followed by female cage which is held down by its claws.
The thing was so small I could only see it properly with 10x magnifying specs.
I tried fingers then tweezers to site these components but so tiny & fiddley nothing was working as I couldn't see what I was doing once fingers were holding the thing.
I almost abandoned a repair & was about to do an internet search for a new remote but not holding out much hope as they're over 20 years old.
Then a rare eureka moment occurred :
Bit of Sellotape sticky side up. Stick down cage & button then turn the assembly over holding see through tape.
It was then easy to see what I was doing allowing accurate positioning & closing of tiny claws with tweezers.
Take of tape & Bob's yer Uncle , remote working again.. PHEW !

Well done Vic, my dad taught me the many uses of sellotape aside from wrapping packages and it is a simple often forgotten tool in the workshop. :-D

I used to use strips of 2" wide tape in the same way to clean the hoods on my convertibles. :-D
