[BLOG] My 208 JOURNEY

Unread post by TehAgent »

Admittedly this car (2014 208 Ehdi with 1595cc engine) wasn't the best of examples when I got it.

List of issues it had.

* Bonnet cable connector for the latch broke the day after I got it home
* missing 2 latch securing bolts for the rear driver side door latch
* missing parcel shelf
* cracked touch screen on infotainment system
* lower wishbone bush failure on both sides
* play in the inner tie rod joints both sides
* badly needed an oil and filter change. As well as sump clean and pick up clean
* rear washer hose at the tail gate snapped
* missing a rubber bung under the spare wheel??
* very worn edge to front tyre
* bonnet and front bumper have seen better days as they are heavily stone chipped
* passenger side rear window regulator giving up life
* passenger rear window cluncking when opening
* brake discs and pads need replacing
* front drivers window not holding auto memory have to keep resetting it
* front drivers window not in runner and was coming up out side the window guides
* oil around top of intercooler pipe work
* cam belt will need replacing along with pullies and water pump

Well, first thing i did was to secure that drivers side window, popped the door car off and with window full open, managed to feed the runner around the glass to put it back in the runner.

Next up was getting the wishbones replaced as the rear bushes had totally failed which my son helped me with. Apparently it went through an MOT 6 months prior...

Finally managed to get the bonnet open, and with a temporary fix, while I await a new cable, a bar has been installed so i can pop the hood.

Also did full discs and pads on the front axel. Will need to do the rears as well but no where near as bad as the fronts were needed

With bonnet access now granted. I set about the engine flush and oil and filter change. And boy did it need it, the filter was fighting for its life, will be giving it another change in the not to distant future to help remove sludge build up, thankfully this is a diesel so its a dry belt.

I also managed to get a replacement touch screen so I have the infotainment back working

The passenger rear regulator was changed over today (29/07/25); the clunking was the glass to runner fixing screw catching the inner strengthening bar. Which had been twisted and was flouling the winding operation, so that's now sorted out.

Currently waiting on the new outer tie rod ends to turn up, as the inners are already here, then that will be delt with, as well as a new tyre.

Currently waiting on the two bolts to arrive to sort out the lock

That's all for now. Ill try and find a decent image hosting site to get some photos up.

Anyway, if you have read this far. Thanks for listening

Did you drag this out of a scrapyard? :-D Sounds like you'll be spending a lot of blood, sweat and tears on this one.

You can upload pictures direct to the forum and we recommend that you do as many photo's have been lost due to the vagaries of the image hosting sites.

It was a direct swap for a bmw 320D 05 plate. It sounds a lot, but in fairness its just had a crap maintenance history, so im currently fixing what others decided to not bother with.

Its small wear and tear items to be fair that have been neglected. Overall it's not in bad condition. I make it sound worse than it is lol

Future proofed the bad design. No more bonnet issues hopefully

Seems the thumb nail is the correct way around. But when you open the image its upside down

This seems to be a quirk of some digital cameras and most phone cameras.
The trick is to open your photo in an image viewer, rotate it 90°,the rotate it back and save it. Of course, if it displays upside down in your image viewer, rotate it 180° and save it.

Well, after my escapades of getting the bonnet open, fitted a new bonnet release cable.

So that's now back to normal

Still had a clunking on the front end after doing the lower wishbones, so took it down my friends garage and put it on the rattler, I thought it was the drivers side top mount, turns out it was the drivers side top link. So both sides have been changed.

That sorted the knocking out.

Took it to citrojims, didn't have much luck talking to the ECU using his laptop. But had a odb2 reader. Which shows I have a clogged dpf. No surprise given the state of the oil filter and its obvious lack of previous maintaince

Now just need to sort out the very temperamental passenger side window that seems to not want to work every now and then. And the drivers window that doesnt want to remember how much travel it has every time you start the engine.

I'm sure the passenger side window is something to do with the glass and runners, as the regulator is fine when working and already had a look at the motor and the bushings which are also fine.

I also need to find a bung for the boot floor as its currently missing one.

Was good to see you Ian :D It was odd that my Diagbox would not talk to your engine ECU although it could 'see' it n the global test and see the faults...

We need to try a different version of Diagbox...
