2008 307 1.6 Hdi Does replacing alternator pulley mean removing alternator?

Unread post by Davre1 »

Alternator pulley disintegrated and was found lying on the sump guard, leaving just its innards still attached to the alternator 😢.

I have the M10 splined bit and associated nut required to remove the pulley and these do just fit with the alternator in situ, but I was just wondering before I invest in any more tools has anybody successfully removed the alternator pulley without removing the alternator?

Alternatively do Peugeot provide any instructions for removing the alternator? I have seen a couple of YouTube video's but they don't seem to match up with my 1.6 Hdi (DV6TED4). Do I need to remove the DPF heatshield and exhaust gas temp sensor (hoping not 🤞) to gain access to the alternator's rear fixing bolts?

Any guidance gratefully received 😊

Done a few, always easier with alternator out. The awkward bolts on alternator only need to be slackened off, they hold on a expanding collar / wedge system.
If you can get at it without removing, you will need plenty of leverage.

Many thanks Steve, I hadn't realised that the rear bolts do not have to be fully removed so that's a bonus. But getting access to them still looks challenging, did you need to remove DPF heatshield?

No but I have a huge variety of 3/8 drive wobbly extensions etc, Think I used a spanner on last one.

I think the last one I did I had to remove a/c bolts to get better access at bottom, If you do that dont loosen the pipes, just support with a hook or cable ties

Thanks for your help with this Steve, I eventually got the alternator off and removed the pulley with the aid of a long bar. Pretty sure I couldn't of done it without removing the alternator from the car.
The DPF heatshield clamp initially stopped me getting a spanner onto the lower rear bolt of the alternator, in the end I had to trim this clamp down with a hacksaw.
