205 struts change challenge

Unread post by 205alex »

Hi,
Have spent the day today trying to remove my front suspension struts.
The plan is to change top mounts and bearings as there is a twang/knock from the stering when parking etc as if the bearing isnt turning properly.

At the moment I havent even been able to get either strut out. In pushing the hub etc down to try and get the strut out gear box oil began to leak from next to the drive shaft - can this just be topped up again or has damage been done.

What is the best way to get the struts out without pusing the hub etc so far down. I fitted spring compressors to try to make it easier but have seen other folk do it without them.

Part of my problem may be the pinch bolts - both are stuck in the hub after taking the nut out and Im just waiting for those to soak in some oil as much hammering hasnt moved them at all.

Any help apreciated thanks!

If you haven't got the bolt out you're probably fighting a losing battle. If it won't come out probably best to remove hub and strut complete and deal with it on the bench. Letting the shaft move out the gearbox and leak oil is no biggie, it can be topped up - but sometimes it damages the seal and it leaks afterwards.

Cheers Richard, removed the hubs with the strut in the end and was alot easier , though ended up drilling out one of the pinch bolts.

Unfortunately pretty standard fare on an old car - infinitely easier with the whole assembly off the car!
