Hey guys, hoping someone can point me in the right direction with the sound my 106 makes.
Something rotating in engine / gearbox makes a high pitched noise when RPMs are raised. Happens in every gear while driving and also in neutral reving when standing still, so it wouldn't have anything to do with moving wheels / drive shafts etc.
Very noticable sound while driving, car drives and shifts fine otherwise.
1994 Peugeot 106 954cc engine 50 hp manual transmission
No A/C and no power steering
The gearbox oil was replaced six months ago
My best guess would be either gearbox or something in pulley / belt area but after looking for a while I wasn't able to find any videos that come close to this sound.
Thanks for any help !

Re: 106 Strange Noise Problem Revving Engine
I wonder whether the high pitched noise is a whistle rather than a squeak, a possible leaky vacuum pipe somewhere causing the whistle as you suck in more air with higher engine revs? Just a thought! Check all your hoses for hardness and possible hairline cracks and don't forget the power steering suction hose too.
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Thank you for that idea, will be taking a look at the hoses if something is wrong there. Need to get a friend to help me out and locate the sound, not ideal for a one man job haha.mickthemaverick wrote: 07 Jul 2025, 12:18 I wonder whether the high pitched noise is a whistle rather than a squeak, a possible leaky vacuum pipe somewhere causing the whistle as you suck in more air with higher engine revs? Any other advice is much appreciated

Use a bit of hose pipe, one end held to an ear and move the other end around to help locate the noise.

Re: 106 Strange Noise Problem Revving Engine
Small update: If you listen from the outside of the car next to one of the front wheels, the noise is clearly noticable on the right side. At the left (gearbox side) it's much more quiet, so for now I'm ruling out anything gearbox / diff related. I would put my money on a bad alternator, will need to go in for closer inspection.

Handy if it's not in the gearbox. Hope able to identify it and it is something as simple as an alternator.
