308 Urea Tanks and reprogramming

Unread post by dram773 »

Good morning all,
Owing to the notorious P20E8 fault, I'm looking at repairing or replacing the urea tank on my 2017 308 SW.
The present tank has part number 12674101 and I believe that if I do a like-for-like replacement, no reprogramming will be required.
Unfortunately, the only used tanks I can find at present are labelled P1002559/p1001677 taken from 2018 models although apparently suitable for 2017. Would these tanks have to be programmed and, if so, can it be done with my Diagbox 9.186 and VCX se interface - e.g. by just telling it a new tank has been fitted?
Many thanks

None of those part numbers look correct. All the PSA numbers I've seen are 10 digits long. Maybe the actual tank manufacturer's part numbers?

9811106180 appears to be the original part number.
9818559380 was the part number for the updated tank I had fitted to my 2015 308 in 2020.
1682620080 is the latest part number, or was in January.

From a discussion on another forum.

Well, new tank arrived, number on the sticker is 981 855 9380.
The underside of the tank is stamped 1682615580 along with the date 2024/01/29.

Thanks Paul, that's very helpful. I think you are correct about the breakers listing the tank manufacturer's part numbers, as those match what can be seen in the photos of the undersides of the tanks.
Unfortunately I haven't yet come across 9811106180 listed.
I have seen 9818559380 and 1682620080. Do you know if Diagbox 9.186 can reprogramme the vehicle if I fit one of those?

This was my reasoning when the 2020 tank failed this year and I went looking for a second hand one. When that was fitted (not by me) I don't think any programming was done other than clearing the errors and reinitialising the Denox system. In that respect the car was fixed, although I have an occasional error about a faulty NOx sensor which is a different problem.

Going back to 2020 I got a local Peugeot dealer to fit a new tank that I bought from Poland. They were happy to do the job as I'm sure they were crying out for work following lockdowns. They also fitted new firmware as the information at the time was that it was necessary. Later information seems to indicate that the firmware upgrade was actually a behaviour modifier and caused the system to release the Adblue pressure and return the fluid to the tank. This would mean that it would be beneficial to any tank if true.

The different part number supersessions are probably to do with internal modifications replacing metal parts with plastic, physical modifications so that the tank can be used with later cars that have the Adblue filler up under the fuel filler cap, etc. Thus tanks are all backwards compatible, going through the supersessions but it's probable that you wouldn't be able to physically fit an early tank to your car.

What this is getting round to is to say that if your car doesn't have the new firmware already fitted then you would need access to the PSA servers which costs money. However I would imagine that the version of Diagbox you are talking about would be able to clear the errors and reinitialise the Denox system. My Diagbox version 7.58 can certainly do this.

Finally, I don't know whether you need to tell the car that a new tank has been fitted or not. I suspect not as reinitialising is probably the same thing but if not then it would be in Pack, Repair somewhere.

A real final thought. Have you tried clearing the faults and reinitialising the Denox system yet?

Hi Paul,

Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to give such a detailed answer - very much appreciated!
Yes, I added about 5L AdBlue and almost filled the tank (so the original level wasn't too low), locked the car and went away for at least 5 min before returning and switching on ignition and waiting 30 secs before starting engine (as instructed in manual). Cleared the P208E and reinitialised the denox system. Urea and Service lights returned after about 4 miles, with the 700 mile range warning. Repeated clearing and reinitialising every morning for about a week - no change. Engine management light has never appeared though, just Urea and Service.

I've found a breaker offering a 9811106180 / 12674101 NU and claims the pump was tested before removal from donor. Although it's £350 that's better than £1-2k for a new one and he's offering 3 months warranty, so I might go for it if it's still available when I get a chance to collect it. Fitting seems straightforward.

Before that step I'm hoping for an opportunity to drain the tank, check for the tell-tale signs of leaks and inspect/replace the injector, but knowing my luck the problem will be the pump and/or pressure sensor in the tank.

Thanks again for your kind support.

What year vehicle was that removed from? That's the very first part number.

Where do you fill your Adblue? Under the boot floor or next to the fuel filler?

Donor was 2016. The 12674101 NU manufacturer's number is the same as my 2017. AdBlue filler is under the boot floor.
