ran fine then no start xpic

Unread post by p1cass0p0w3r »

hi all i have a 2005 xsara picasso diesel that ran fine then....failed to start battery light on economy mode active no mil/check engine
removed battery following the procedure fully charged tried again no start
got rac out for jump wouldnt start (seemed like power was draining even when his van connected.)
rac say not a power issue maybe timing slip
slow crank battery dips on start to 8v and audible bong wipers try to wipe

seems like power to me or maybe starter but its buried so cant bang
can probe starter positive to chassis 12.6v jumping to solenoid sparks
trying to start in first gear rolls the car a few inches

not sure what to test but wife says she can hear a clicking from engine bay when car is locked
and squezing fuel primer for a few minutes never goes solid
so how do i check/diagnose ignition

all comments appreciated

Ok thinking old school find out what piston is at top dead center when the timing is lined up , remove cam cover then line up the timing buy spanner on bottom pully then rotate clock wise to line up the timing hole , it's a hole in the top pulley and it lines up with a hole in the head, if you know what piston is at tdc and your brave enough to remove an injector then get a nice clean length of wire like a coat hanger and lower it down into the hole where the injector lives , then your need to get back on the spanner on the bottom pully and rotate either way a few degrees and see if you feel the spot where it stops and then moves again if the timing is correct that hole in the top pulley should line up with the hole in the head.

If that makes sense to you it's how I once checked my timing on a picasso 2.0hdi.

Also with it not starting my one would run ok then if I'd stop to fill up with diesel it would be a pig to start , I checked the leak over pipes and 3 were perrished, I renewed all of them and it cured my problem .

Primer not going hard , I'd say it's perished and these are know to go like it , Ebay sell them and there simple to change , and yes my old car had to have one and when I replaced it , priming the thing was a whole new ball game it worked , the primer held pressure and no more air issues.

As far as i was aware all 2.0 HDi Xsara Picassos are Bosch injection system so should not have a hand primer??
Didnt think they ever came with siemens injection system :-k
You got a pic of the primer?

Did the RAC try a blast of easy start? Any fault codes?

Could be the crank shaft sensor has failed, these may not give a fault code.

I'd say it's a 1.6 they have, ive just had a look at my old photo stock of my old 2.0hdi and it didn't have a hand primer ,if it's this type
https://ebay.us/m/mslV2T (which i can't see it being ) then it's got one .

That ebay link is a 2.0 16v HDi which again was never fitted to the Xsara Picasso.
I was going off the OP’s profile which says its a 2.0.
Really need more info from the OP here.

Yes, in tank pumps are a pretty common failure on these cars but if it has a hand primer it wont have one.

I've seen the 2.0 engine cover sitting on the 1.6 before and round the other way. I'd like to see a photo of this primer too.

Some of these engines had a primer where my large red circle is drawn on the picture, if this engine is air locked then he will have to bleed each fuel rail union small read circle by cracking undon each nut and getting someone to turn the engine over by key till diesel runs free then tighten the nut back up , each one in turn . Rags will be needed as this can be a messy job

If doing this on high pressure diesel you have to be careful not to get any injected through the skin.

guyssssss so sorry am working 12hr shifts and now cycling to and from ahaha
it is a 1.6 diesel
vin VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

generic elm reads
p1351 ignition coil control circut high voltage idm input circut malfunction/ignition coil control circut high voltage sid 803/edc16c3-pre/post heating relay circut. relay not controlled and glow plugs supplied status pending

and after rac had van and jumper pack connected also got

p1639 vehicle id block corrupted or not programmed

i think maybe faulty starter draining power ( but still didnt fire while being jumped)
i can hear pump prime under rear seat first key turn but primer bulb still no resistance (and that wouldnt cause power drain ?)

thanks for replys

On a 1.6 quite likely the timing belt has broken....

can see cam turn slowly when looking in in oil filler so dont think its broken but not sure
leaning towards faulty starter because of power drain even when jumping

If it has a hand primer you wouldnt normally have an in tank pump.

If it woldnt fire with a jump pack + jump leads from a running van i very much doubt its a power draining issue.

I would be getting a blast of easy start up the intake to see if it will fire.
