Snapped conrod?
Hi people.
My first month of being a Peugeot 306 TD owner has been an enjoyable one, (far better than the citroen xantia I drove last in my brief peroid away from peugeots) expect last friday, all packed to go on holiday but shortly into the journey after pulling away from lights in traffic I hurd a clattering sound, oh exhaust I thought, then bang and a lot of oily smoke. Now have a whole in the side of the engine. That will be a new engine then.
The car is a 1997 glx td with 106k on the clock. Is this a common problem? I have since been told they do this at this mileage and above??
I bought the car from a garage who say they will put a new engine into it under gaurentee as long as it is cheep, they are talking about £750, all in supplied and fitted.
My only fear is they will put a high mileage engine into the car and it will do it again.
I guess I have three options. 1)just go with what the garage say, 2) try and find a low milage engine (hopefully around 50k), 3) try and fund a new/recon engine (pug want about 1400+250 sur charge + VAT)
Any advice please as I am banging my head here!
Many thanks Jools

This sort of thing usually only happens if you run out of oil, i certainly wouldnt expect a TD with only 100k to punch a hole in the block with a con rod at all,
how about this engine on Ebay?

I can say that lack of oil was not a problem, it was very healthy 30 mins before I set off. (although I cannot be sure it has been good for the past 100k of previous owners).
I have heard that it was the later td engines fitted before the hdi engine that cause th problems. I will try and find out more.
I will be a lot happier if I manage to find a lower mileage engine, so I will have a good look tommorrow.

That is the problem, a full service history accounts for nothing, the engine looked and sounded fine and has been serviced, stamped service book and bills etc etc, but all it takes is lack of oil now and again and bang.
I will just have to try and find a low mileage engine, ok maybe a 50k engine will be a bit of a prob, but I would prefer something under 80k. I was planning to keep the car a few years
I wonder how easy it would be to put an hdi engine into the car????

May look into it, I think the only problem will be the fuel delivery system from what I have been told the hdi is ecu controlled while the td is mecanical?? (may stand corrected).
May not bother as I do not want too much hastle. I have done the whole engine conversion thing before and it can prove expensive, it is ok if you can get a written off hdi and transfer all the relevent parts (you may end up in effect reshelling the hdi). Cannot see the garage doing that.

The main problem I am having is that the garage is only a sales garage that use local garages for repairs, they have suggested that I look for an engine as well, and talk to garages about fitting it.
I am trying to source an engine as they seem to be draging their heals, it is now a week since the engine broke and the car is still at home, they have made no real progress in getting the problem sorted.
The garage want to get it fixed as cheep as possible, i.e. the lowest quote they have as guide price of £750 supplied and fitted, but cannot give any history to the engine, obviously I am not happy with that and suspect that I will have to stump up additional money for anything better, another reason I am trying to find an engine that I am happy with.
Just a nightmare that I can see draging on for a few weeks.

sorry to hear about your problem.
This has happened before to other owners of your engine both in 306 and ZX forms). It was discussed at length on Honest johns website (try doing a forum search for it). The problem seems to only affect engines with a DHY code (stamped on the homologation plate in the boot) Not the DHX code.Honest john himself suspected a faulty batch of conrods which was put in these engines, but it was around this time (1997) that the service interval for the TD engines was stretched to 10,000 miles from 6000 previously. How often had the oil in your engine been changed? I don't think oil should be left in one of these for any longer than 5000 personally. It is a rare thing to have happen, but it is fair to say that there has been a spate of failure of this type on engines of this age.

I did get oh holiday ok, we were meeting a couple of friends anyway, and one of those came and picked us up which was cool.
Mine is a DHY engine code!
I only bought the car last month, previous to that the service book had been stamped every 10k, with recipts to prove the history. But that means nothing. I have to agree on the oil thing I woulkd not like to keeping oil in an engine for 10k in any car, around 5k is better.
Is there another engine I could have fitted to avoid this conrod problem because I assume that if it is a problem it could occur in a another engine?

Hi Jools,
Exactly the same thing happened to me two years ago.
I bought a 98 R 306 Dturbo back in 2000 with 56,000 miles on the clock. The car run great for couple of years (well apart from the air-con condenser) then in August 2002 on the way back down to visit the family in Wales there was an almighty bang from the front of the car. I was in the outside lane of the M4 doing 80+. A third of the sump, the con-rod and bits of engine block along with all the oil went flying out of the back of my car, it’s lucky that there wasn’t anyone killed behind me.
I had to leave the car back in Wales and come back up to the midlands, not having time to sort it out I went for the Peugeot supplied re-con engine (so it’s a quality item, ha) . The total bill including a new starter motor and air-con compressor which where also damaged was around 3,500 pounds. Basically as much was the car was worth, if I had known that at the time I would have run the car long the central barrier and wrote it off.
I bought it with a lease service printout showing services every 10,000 miles, but since it had done a lot a miles very quickly each service was only a few months apart. For next two years I had it serviced it very 6,000 miles, then at 84,000 miles the engine went pop. I’m not convinced that a lack of oil charges would cause the con-rod to snap, normally it’s the turbo which fails if the oil isn’t changed often enough. Plus I know of people who have run this engine for years without having it serviced and not had this problem.
There is defiantly something wrong with the 97 – 98 engines, but they are failing out of warranty so Peugeot must be thanking their lucking stars that they can wash their hands of it ….. typical French, this is the first and last French car I’ll ever own.
As for a replacement engine I would look for a re-con unit, unless you can find a second hand non 97-98 one where you know the history. The chances of having the same problem with a re-con engine are pretty slim. Normally a re-con engine would have covered the best part of 200,000 miles before it’s reworking and the effected engines explod way before then. If you get a second hand engine you need to make sure it isn’t another one of these.

Glad to hear your hols went ok.
I don't really know much about replacement engines, but i presume you would want either a low milage td from before 1997 or a post 1998 one with average/lowish miles. I think this problem is rare enough though that you could put another 1997 DHY coded td engine in your car and you would probably be ok. Remember that that hundreds of thousands of these were produced in that year and only a small percentage have thrown a rod.I have talked to a couple of experienced mechanics and neither had heard of this problem and i know they look after a few xuds, in fact they were full of praise for the engine sturdiness.
I continue to suspect that this engine simply doesn't like 10k oil changes.Mine is a 1997 with a DHY code but it has always had 6000 mile oil changes for 35k before i bought it and then 3k mile changes since then. Remember that these old tech indirect injection diesel engines really dirty their oil quickly with soot and other combustion by products, new oil goes in looking all golden and is completeley black within 20 miles. This alone tells me that these engines need very regular oil changes, 3-5k ideally but no longer than 6! There are very narrow oil ways in these that can easily clog and create area of over heating, i think this might have happened to you.
