My current 306 has a heavy clutch and poor gear selection, since the cable adjustment is at the bottom of its travel I can assume the clutch is about to die. The car as covered 113,000 miles and does not tow anything. What is the normal lifespan of these as my 309 clutch died at 160,000.
After talking to a couple of Xantia owners, I have discovered when the radiator dies at 100,000 miles the clutch will follow suit, probably of a broken heart! I have recently changed the radiator so can I expect the clutch to follow suit as the 306 has the same series engine as the xantia

When I bought my 306 from a Peugeot dealer, it was two year old with 56,000 miles on it. The clutch was so heavy it was almost impossible to hold the pedal down while in traffic, they replaced it under warranty.
I’ve read elsewhere that the clutch cable on right hand drive 306s runs next to the exhaust. This dries the cable out, makes the pedal heavy and stops the self-adjuster on the clutch working. Every around 6 months to a year or when I remember, I take the clutch cable off the gearbox and try to drip oil down the cable while pulling the cable in and out. I’m not sure if it does any good, but it only takes a few minutes.

The clutch on a 306 TD is similar to that in a BXTZDturbo. I ran a BX for seven years, covering 110K miles (including 45K of towing a caravan)and the clutch was still sound when I parted with the car. It's now owned by another forum member, and AFAIK, although it's recorded 150K, the clutch still hasn't been replaced.

Got to say that we used to have a 306TD as a company car (of sorts) only 56k on a 'P' reg and the clutch was so heavy that the dealer had the car for a month and couldn't work out what was up with it. Not a gradule thing but from new. All the office I work in have a left leg with large thigh muscles. Once had 160k out of a Ford fiesta diesel.
