Hi
My Partner 1.4 petrol 97 sometimes goes up in rpm and if I turn off the car it won't start.
This problem will just disappear and it goes perfect for long times and then out of the blue it happens again.
I been cleaning the throttlehousing and all of its components but nothing helps
Checked every connection also, but so hard to solve when I don't know where to start.
Been around car and engines all my life but this is a mystery to me.
Anyone who had the same problem ?

I assume the engine is a TU3 with a cable type throttle body? I'm not that familiar with these.
On the opposite side to the cable drum on the throttle is the throttle position sensor (on the bottom) and the idle air modulator valve (on the top).
The idle air modulator valve regulates bypass air to keep a stable idle RPM. It's possible that this is sticking open.
You could disconnect it and adjust the idle via the adjustment on cable drum (IF the idle needs adjusting).
If you have air conditioning the revs may drop dramatically when the compressor kicks in but this whole exercise is only to see if the modulator valve is your problem. So I wouldn't run the aircon!
