1.9td Diesel pump mod

Unread post by Barney00731102012 »

I’m looking for some advice/ help.
Ok I’ve got a Peugeot Boxer 1.9 td which I’ve just fitted a new engine, we’ve just got back from Scotland after completing the Nc500. To be honest the camper did well for a 24 year. However it really did struggle up one or two extremely steep hills even in first gear and lots of clutch smell. So now we are back I’m looking at gettIng a bit more low end power/ torque. I just purchased a LDA updated pin and a pump spacer. Obviously I don’t want to break the land speed record just want it to be better off the mark without blowing the engine to bits. So I’m looking for advice from anyone who’s done the mod to a 1.9td or what else I might benefit from.

A 3 parter....

...BUT, a LOT depends on the fuel pump type fitted.... I take it you do have the Bosch type on yours and not the Lucas one....

Yes Bosch Ve pump, did the mods today fitted a updated LDA pin along with the timing spacer mod, easy with the Alternator removed, haven’t had a chance to try it yet as I want to adjust the turbo waste gate first.

It's not difficult to get a bit more ooomph out of a Bosch VE pump by screwing down the LDA and tweaking the maximum fuelling adjustment.

Be aware that any 'tuning' of the pump results in over-fuelling with a concomitant increase in smoke. This may have an impact at MoT time when doing the smoke density test... Even a good 1.9TD in standard tune is not far off the lower limit.

Also, be careful in adjusting the maximum fuelling screw as this results in raising the governor limit and raises the maximum rpm past the recommended redline and thus you risk engine damage if you miss a gear during enthusiastic driving or the MoT operative is a bit enthusiastic when doing the smoke density test...

Do play by all means although I strongly recommend a careful approach and returning any adjustments made back to standard before you take the vehicle for an MoT.

Ok the Peugeot drives a lot better, it’s more responsive and smoother to drive, the temperature gauge is at the same as before the mod. I’ve just brought a turbo boost gauge just to see that it’s all good however I’m not quite sure we’re the small clear hose goes from the gauge. As far as smoke from the exhaust goes it’s got a slight puff when accelerating. It’s never going to break the land speed which wasn’t the intention I just wanted a bit more get up and go for steep hills around Scotland.

Bit late to the party, I have a 1998 Boxer camper, as you say the wrong choice if you're after a sporty drive, but ok-ish so far. Hope you don't mind being bombarded with questions, such as where did you get another engine, what went wrong with the old one, etc. I'm still getting to know mine, and would welcome others' experience, things to look for etc.

I've been getting exhaust fumes in the cabin, fitted a new exhaust and it's a bit better but still there. Thinking exhaust manifold and turbo as the next possible culprit, struggling to think how I get to the back of the engine, or does it have to come out for that?

Any ideas and experiences welcome,

Thanks
