Xantia Auxilliary Belt broke

My Auxilliary belt broke on the way back from work today, don`t know what caused it probably just old age. Is there any checks I should do when replacing the belt?

They have a nasty habit of getting into the cam belt and throwing the timing out (at the very best). So listen carefully to the engine and check that it's still running smoothly (and is not a lot noisier than previous).
