The perils of thinking you can fix sht and miss the follow up MOT test.

Citroen C5 2006 HDI

So got MOT'd end of last month. They found the pipe for the suspension was leaking and as they knew nothing about how it worked (it that one of these hydraulic suspension cars?)

I took back thinking it would be an expensive repair (looking at parts). Turned out that it was just a floppy pipe, which was cut and reattached. I replaced blubs myself and expected to send back for new rear disks and brakes. Sadly I mucked up my dates and just missed deadline.

Anyway I sent back today and yeah, pipe was done and bulbs were fine but the sods found more to fail on.

Emissions. Which they said could be a big issue (it hasnt had an oil change for a while) (I usually put redex through)

Windscreen washer (which takes a while to pump the water through. But it does)

Bl00dy wheel bearing.

All on top of the brakes disks and pad and a fluctuating brake (which the guy says may mean new caliper)

So lots of expensive work. The worry would also be the disintegration of brakes on removal.

Love this car. Have a jag xj and the citroen shts on it for comfort.

Am I really contemplating spending a tonne load of cash just to save it?

Keep calm and carry on?

It's only nuts and bolts (and money, and time).

I think we know (and can sympathetically share) the answer to this… Yes!
No replacing it once it’s gone!

Sorry to hear the list has grown (but to be fair they sound like things worth fixing ;) )

So garage maming a hash things. Saying it needs new rear calipers roo and that they may not be able to source the bolts. A 3 second search and found them al over the internet so, meh.

Passed emissions. As I though it would. They thought it would be a big issue. Frankly seems everything is going to be a big issue for them.

They quoted 700 for the brakes!!!

Disks and oast +50 quid and calipers +50 each. Guess I should have not just went with the MOT testers this time first time I have left it. God know what they will charge for the wheel bearing.

At least if you stay on site you can argue or point out their errors, like fail ‘cos suspension leak so brakes etc when the leak was from the gearbox and not suspension fluid! I changed mot station because the guy would record numerous stupid things that didn’t matter, at the next mot place the car went straight through with no advisories two years running.

Can't help wonder if this is an increasing issue - garages that seem to be populated by folks who really seem to dislike actual working on cars!? So you get this grey skys outlook (and indeed perhaps also ludicrous "try and put you off" type scary pricing - £700 for brakes!?! Really?) in the hope they can stick with easier "routine service" stuff instead?

Simple answer is, find an MOT station that does not do repairs. I have two near me, cars only fail if they have should - oh, be nice to the MOT tester. :)

Result! Do you know when the car last had an oil change?
My car probs has the same engine as yours - 1.6hdi 110hp? My EGR is flappy and I'm looking for ways to avoid an emissions fail on my next MOT
