I've been doing an oil consumption test on my car (puretech 1.2).
By the time we get it back to the dealer it will have done just under 1000 miles. The service manager is now trying to make out that it has to be 'exactly' 600 miles and that we'll have to start again. I can't see any logic or science behind that. I'd appreciate any views on this.

Hi and welcome.
Not quite sure what you're getting at here/the purpose etc, but I would agree with you that I don't understand why it would need to be 'exactly' 600 miles rather than 1000.
My only assumption is that they have a set 'figure' for how much oil should be used over 600 miles, rather than over 1000 miles.
However, it should be possible to ratio that to 1000 miles by calculation (<specified oil consumption per 600 miles> * (1000/6000) = oil consumption per 1000 miles) and they're either too uneducated to do that; too lazy to do that; or if this is a warranty issue then perhaps they know that PSA won't accept it unless the test is met specifically.
If it is a specified test by PSA they're trying to follow, then unfortunately you're unlikely to win the argument with them - they will just stick to their guns. "computer says no".

Re: Puretech oil consumption test
I have had an experience where the dealer deliberately misinterpreted (a different aspect of) the PSA documentation, I asked to see the PSA document, and they spent 40 minutes looking through servicebox before having to admit that the requirement was not in the documentation, but it must be true as "the technician was trained in France".

Re: Puretech oil consumption test
600 miles is an approximate conversion of 1000 km (960 km) so maybe it is this. How are they checking the amount of oil used, draining and refilling or just on the dipstick, cold, hot, how long left standing ?
It is not clear but is your car new and just reached 1000 miles or is it older and you have an oil consumption problem that is being checked ?
If old then how many miles, how old, oil consumption you are getting ?
If new, when an engine is new they can use a bit more oil as it wears in.
